A long-running local coffee company has brewed up a move into another big-box retail chain.

Blanchard’s Coffee Co. announced Monday that its products will soon be available in more than 40 Target stores in Virginia and Maryland.

Target is slated to start selling 12-ounce bags of Blanchard’s two most popular blends, the Dark as Dark and Blanchard’s Blend, starting on Aug. 3, Blanchard’s vice president of sales Stephen Robertson said.

Dark as Dark will be available in whole bean and Blanchard’s Blend in both whole bean and ground versions.

The initial rollout in 41 Target stores includes all locations in the Richmond area. The move into Target stores comes about a year after Blanchard’s products started to be sold over Target’s website, Robertson said.

The expanded deal with Target also comes a year after Blanchard’s coffee hit the shelves of Walmart locations in August 2024, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic but also in other areas of the United States. Walmart carries 12-ounce bags of the Dark as Dark, Blanchard’s Blend, and Basecamp blends.

Robertson said the expansion into Target stores comes in response to evolving customer shopping trends and as part of a push to make the coffee as convenient as possible for customers to find and buy.

“As with all of our retailer partners, Walmart, and now Target, present the opportunity for us to meet our current and future customers where they’re shopping,” Robertson said in an email this week.

“Consumers are modifying long standing shopping habits for a variety of reasons, price and convenience being some of the most significant. If our customers are shopping at a retailer that sells most of the things on their shopping list, our coffee being on the shelf adds convenience to their week, and that’s a win for everyone.”

All told, Blanchard’s says its coffee is currently available for sale at more than 500 retail locations across the country. The company’s coffee can also be found at Kroger, Wegmans, Whole Foods, Publix, The Fresh Market, Food Lion and independent retailers.

Blanchard’s was founded in 2005 by company president David Blanchard. It currently operates brick-and-mortar cafes in Forest Hill and the Museum District, and also has a coffee shop in the Fan. The company operates a 8,500-square-foot roasting and packaging facility at 1903 Westwood Ave. near Scott’s Addition.
