Carytown will soon be getting a new gas station, thanks to one of the neighborhood’s big box grocers.

Kroger last month received approval from the city to build a new fueling center at its existing store at 3507 W. Cary St. in the International Shopping Center.

Development plans approved June 6 show the station would be built in place of the now-vacant building at 3553 and 3555 W. Cary St., which previously housed a Starbucks and Baker’s Crust restaurant. The 5,900-square-foot building would be demolished as part of the project.

The gas station would have a 19-foot-tall canopy with 14 pumps and eight parking spaces, including one handicap spot, according to the documents.

The Truist bank branch at 3513 W. Cary St. and the existing Kroger pharmacy drive-thru next to the site would remain, according to the project’s demolition plan.

The applicant for the project is Ryne McCoy of Robertson Loia Roof. McCoy did not respond to a request for comment by press time on Wednesday.

The Kroger grocery store property and surrounding shopping center properties are owned by MGJ Limited Co., which signed off on authorizing the Kroger fuel center application.

A Kroger representative confirmed the plans and said the company hopes to open the fuel center by January 2026, if not earlier.

“We’re looking forward to serving the Carytown community and having the fuel center there in Carytown,” the spokesperson said Wednesday.

According to a document from the City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities, as of May the project was out to bid and a contractor had not yet been determined; the Kroger representative declined to comment on whether that was still the case.

Kroger has gas stations at around 15 of its approximately 20 stores in the Richmond area, according to the company website: at 1510 Eastridge Road, 4690 Williamsburg Road, 901 N. Lombardy St., 11895 W. Broad St. and 1601 Willow Lawn Drive, with several others across the region.
