Last two local Which Wich sandwich shops go dark

Sandwich chain Which Wich has shuttered the doors on what had been its last two remaining Richmond-area locations. 

The locations at 15608 WC Commons Way in Midlothian’s Westchester Commons and 1601 Willow Lawn Drive have gone dark after they stopped operations in recent weeks.

According to online ordering websites like Yelp and GrubHub, the restaurants are permanently closed. 

The Westchester Commons and Willow Lawn locations were the last remaining Which Wich spots in Richmond, after locations in Glen Allen and on West Broad Street across from the Siegel Center closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The nearest open Which Wich location is in Williamsburg in Settlers Market. A manager from that location confirmed the Richmond locations’ closures. 

The locations’ phone numbers have been disconnected, and both locations’ doors were padlocked last week, with furniture stacked and tables put away inside.

A competitor with other fast casual sandwich chains like Jimmy John’s and Subway, Which Wich sells customizable sandwiches that are ordered by marking selections on a sandwich bag with a red Sharpie.

It is unclear why the two local Which Wich spots closed and whether the locations were under the same franchisee. Company representatives did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

Which Wich was founded in Dallas in 2003 and began selling franchises in 2005. The company has experienced some major unit loss in recent years. Circa 2018 the company had more than 430 locations, but experienced a rough go of it during the pandemic, closing a net 134 locations between 2020 and 2023.

Currently, there are 183 locations listed on Which Wich’s website, nearly all of those in the U.S. According to the company website, the chain has seven locations left in Virginia with the closure of the Willow Lawn and Westchester Commons locations.
