Local contractor Old Dominion Group expands in S.C. with insulator acquisition
A longtime Richmond company is expanding further into the Palmetto State with its latest acquisition.
Midlothian-based Old Dominion Group, a specialty services contractor with offices across the U.S., has acquired Greenville, South Carolina-based insulation company Galloway-Bell.
It’s the latest acquisition for Old Dominion Group, which previously absorbed Roanoke-based Kirby-Cundiff Insulation, and, also earlier this year, Mt. Crawford-based Southern Thermal Solutions.
Old Dominion Group was founded in 1981 as Old Dominion Insulation by Roddy Davoud. In 2021, the ODG name was introduced as an umbrella company for the range of services, which include commercial and industrial insulation, asbestos abatement, electric heat tracing and firestopping.
Today, ODG is headquartered in a 40,000-square-foot building at 12764 Oak Lake Court. The company has around 1,800 employees across 18 offices, including other Virginia locations in Chesapeake, Leesburg, Mt. Crawford, Hollins and Virginia Beach.
It has other outposts in Baltimore, Charlotte, Nashville and Houston.
With the acquisition of Galloway-Bell, ODG takes on a company founded in 1972 that has provided insulation services and products to the Greenville metro area and beyond.
The acquisition closed earlier this year, with Old Dominion Group officially announcing it in June. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Galloway-Bell will retain its name and Greenville office, and now operates as an affiliate company of Old Dominion Group.
Galloway-Bell’s Greenville office marks the first outpost in the South Carolina city for ODG, which has one other South Carolina office in Charleston, according to its website.
Old Dominion Group COO Peter Coyne said the company had become aware of Galloway-Bell’s work in the past few years, admiring its services while getting to know company President Jeff Bell.
“Jeff Bell grew that business with the Galloway family, and grew it to a point where we knew them, we respected them,” Coyne said. “It was a mutual opportunity for us to collaborate and to come together as one entity.”
Last year, the two companies mutually decided that an acquisition would serve both of their needs, Coyne said.
“It gives us new client relationships. We get great, talented individuals to join our business,” Coyne said. “(Galloway-Bell) gets the support of Old Dominion Group and the resources we bring to the table, so I’d say there’s a mutual combination there.”
- Coyne declined to comment on how many employees are coming over from Galloway-Bell, but noted that all of the company’s employees and leadership are remaining on following the acquisition, including Bell and CEO Cally Galloway.
And while ODG has worked on projects in the Greenville area, Coyne said the acquisition presents an opportunity for the company to have a larger footprint in a growing area of South Carolina.
“We have operations in South Carolina, and it was an opportunity to further serve our clients there. It’s a great part of the country, a part of the country we know,” Coyne said. “We’re a growth-oriented business and want to continue to support in new geographies.”
Old Dominion Group has 13 affiliate companies, including Galloway-Bell, per its website. The company CEO is Jeff Davoud, who has been with ODG since 1997 and was named CEO in 2012.
