A private equity-backed thrift store chain with hundreds of stores is expanding into the Richmond region for the first time.

Savers, which sells second-hand clothing, accessories and household goods, among other items, has signed a lease on a 32,000-square-foot space at 9110 W. Broad St. in the Tuckernuck Plaza shopping center.

The thrift store’s space in western Henrico will be next to Value City Furniture and was formerly occupied by Sam Ash Music, which operated there for years until it closed last summer.

Savers is anticipated to open next February or March, according to Melissa Lippe of Pennsylvania-based firm J.C. Bar. Lippe handles leasing at Tuckernuck Plaza.

Loretta Cataldi with Divaris Real Estate represented Savers in the lease negotiations.

Savers is one of several thrift store brands operated by Washington-based Savers Value Village Inc., which calls itself the largest for-profit thrift store operator in the United States and Canada. Private equity firm Ares Management is the company’s majority owner.

In addition to Savers, the company operates stores under the names Value Village, Unique and 2nd Ave. In its 2024 impact report, the company said it operated nearly 330 stores in the United States, Canada and Australia at the end of the previous year.

The Savers location on Broad would appear to be the retailer’s first Richmond-area outpost. The company has a presence in Northern Virginia, where it operates stores under the Savers and other brand names.

The publicly traded company supplies its stores by collecting donations, which it does on behalf of local nonprofit organizations. The retailer pays the charities for the goods and then sells the items in its stores. In Virginia, the company collects donations on behalf of the Lupus Foundation of America and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, according to the company’s website.

Savers spokespeople didn’t respond to requests for comment for this story.

News of the impending arrival of Savers comes after Party City closed its nearby, long-running store in late June.
