A plan to add nearly 300 parking spaces near downtown’s riverfront is moving forward.

Virginia Housing’s Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve the organization’s plan for a new 281-space parking deck at 111 Spring St.

The $15 million structure would replace a grassy area behind Virginia Housing’s headquarters at 601 S. Belvidere St.

The public-private agency, which provides financial incentives to homebuyers and real estate developers, has said it needs the additional parking capacity to account for its growth.

The four-story deck would also be available for paid public use during off-hours, making it an option for concertgoers at the nearby Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront. The new 7,500-capacity venue is set to host its first acts in June.

Virginia Housing’s board voted to approve the planned deck at its meeting this week in Charlottesville. It’s expected to be completed next summer, pending city approvals.

Virginia Housing owns the 1.3-acre plot on which the new deck will be built. CPL is the designer and Hourigan is the general contractor.
