When it comes to the operations of modern-day government, it’s about more than connecting residents and businesses to state and local services. It’s also about forging connections across agencies and departments so that everyone, government personnel included, has a more seamless, positive government experience.

Yet when there are hundreds of government departments and agencies, it can be difficult to streamline resources and service delivery in a way that serves everyone. So in a quickly evolving, technology-dependent world, how can state and local governments continue to foster resident engagement and interagency collaboration without sacrificing productivity or affordability?

It helps to collaborate with the right partner to implement real solutions.

Choosing the right partner
Virginia has long strived to build a stronger and more connected digital government ecosystem to better serve its residents. Since 1997, Tyler Technologies has been a strategic partner in helping Virginia achieve this goal, with a team of Virginia government experts based right here in Richmond.

As the largest software company solely focused on the public sector, Tyler is on a mission to equip communities with technology that connects data, people, and processes across departments and geographic boundaries. From payment processing and disbursements to agency portals and mobile apps, Tyler’s extensive suite of proven platforms and real solutions is custom-made for the public sector and is configurable to meet each government’s unique needs.

For Virginia state government, this means digital systems that work together instead of in silos; increased collaboration among government agencies; more frequent engagement between residents and the state; and a significant boost in cost savings.

Connecting Virginia
Tyler Technologies has worked hand in hand with Virginia state and local government for almost three decades. Our Richmond-based team works exclusively with Virginia partners. We’re not only proud to be your partner in technology, but we’re also your neighbors and friends in the Commonwealth.

Government work is not a side hustle for us. Work with this sector is all that we do, and we are specialists at providing solutions aimed exclusively at better connecting Virginians to their state and local government. Through technology, Tyler firmly believes that citizens can enjoy stronger, safer, more connected communities.

Perhaps you’re a Virginian enjoying frictionless access to online tax and utility bill payments, or maybe you’re seeking care services in your area for an elderly family member. Perhaps you are a state agency who delivers services to every corner of the Commonwealth and is seeking to broaden and deepen your effectiveness through cutting-edge technology. From the Town of Urbanna all the way to Fairfax County, from the Department of Agriculture to the Supreme Court, Tyler is there delivering citizen-forward services that have won more than 75 industry awards in Virginia alone.

Tyler’s Richmond-based Virginia team are specialists in payment processing solutions, websites of all sizes, custom and SaaS applications, and taxpayer portals that give citizens a one-stop experience to transact any payment type. This Richmond team holds an eGovernment services contract with VITA and is positioned to quickly and easily deliver citizen-facing online services to any public body in Virginia.

With Tyler’s outsize position in the public sector, our reach in the Commonwealth allows us to proudly mention that we work with more than with 245 Virginia government agencies comprising 32 state agencies, 64 county departments, 58 schools, 69 municipal departments, and 22 districts.

We solve problems. Whether it’s allowing you to process payments easily and securely, or streamlining Virginia’s school transportation, Tyler can work with your agencies – no matter what size or type entity – to make life easier for you and your constituents. Here are just three recent examples:

Leveraging bus routing software to improve school transportation. Two years ago, school bus delays in Virginia’s Roanoke City Public School District were causing students to arrive at school more than 45 minutes late. The district leveraged Tyler’s Student Transportation solution to create a new system of bus stops, routes, and schedules that would better serve students and families. Since implementing the solution, the district has streamlined the number of bus stops from 11,000 to 2,700 – a 75% reduction – and maintained a 95% on-time performance.

Digitizing legacy paper processes to streamline operations. To keep up with workload demands, the Virginia Department of Corrections’ Background Investigation Unit (BIU) needed a software solution that would streamline operations for its 8,000 background investigations annually. Exchanging legacy paper processes for Tyler’s Background Investigation application has enabled the BIU to increase processing speeds, improve recordkeeping, and eliminate roadblocks associated with physical records management.

Highly configurable payment processing. Our government payment platform, leveraged by 9,000 agencies across the U.S., sets the standard for end-to-end transaction and payment processing excellence. In Virginia alone, we process more than $2B annually. When our partners need a payments option, they know Tyler’s system can connect to virtually any third-party billing system or seamlessly integrate with Tyler billing and cashiering software. It’s secure, modern, robust, and gives users the polished and frictionless experience for government payments that they have come to expect everywhere they conduct business.

Connected government means connected communities
Virginia isn’t the only state seeing this success through strategic partnership with Tyler.

Success has also been seen in West Virginia, which launched a mobile application for vehicle registration and driver’s license renewals, leveraging Tyler’s Resident Engagement Platform. Known as “WVDMV EZ,” the app provides a one-stop solution for accessing West Virginia’s DMV services on the go, reducing foot traffic to brick-and-mortar DMV sites, optimizing department resources, and improving the overall customer experience.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) implemented Tyler’s AI-powered Augmented Field Operations (AFO) solution to transform the monitoring, compliance, and enforcement of fieldwork. Since implementation, the AFO mobile inspection application has helped seven DEP inspectors conduct more than 9,500 in-person inspections annually, reducing inspection time from two to three hours to just a few minutes.

More can be done – together

Government can be more streamlined – and residents are equipped to have a more positive government experience – when digital government systems are built to talk to each other.

Empowering states across the country to meet the needs of their communities requires a combination of deep expertise, a proven track record of improving the resident experience, and a broad portfolio of seamless and intuitive solutions that work. When it comes to connected states for connected communities, Tyler is the one partner who can do it all.
