Sandwich shop chain Capriotti’s to open first Richmond-area store
A hoagie shop from a few hours up north is entering the Richmond market with a spot in Chesterfield.
Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop is preparing to open at 35 Le Gordon Drive in Chesterfield County, just off Midlothian Turnpike. The space is in a newly built commercial outparcel next to the 7 Brew coffee shop at 11 Le Gordon Drive near Winterfield Crossing.
Founded in the 1970s and based out of Wilmington, Delaware, Capriotti’s has over 175 locations nationwide. In addition to classics like meatball subs, Italians and cheesesteaks, its menu also includes best-sellers like “The Bobbie,” filled with turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing, and the “Capastrami,” a hot pastrami sandwich with Swiss cheese and Russian dressing.
Capriotti’s has both corporate-owned and franchised locations, and a spokesperson for the company said the Chesterfield spot will be franchise-owned, but declined to disclose the identity of the franchisee.
Capriotti’s is leasing about 1,500 square feet in the roughly 7,100-square-foot building that, according to Chesterfield County records, is owned and being developed by Steven Biegler. Taylor Long Properties’ Ellen Long and Robert Marshall repped the landlord in the deal.
Capriotti’s space is currently under construction and the company spokesperson said Capriotti’s is aiming to open in November or December.
It’s unclear whether the company will pursue additional locations in the region, a strategy common among new-to-market restaurant chains. Capriotti’s spokesperson said, “There is no ‘target market’ strategy other than having a good partner in a market.”
According to its website, the cost to open a Capriotti’s franchise can range from $422,000 to $818,000, a figure that includes a $40,000 franchise fee and excludes real estate costs. Capriotti’s claims that its top 25 percent of franchises average around $1.1 million in annual sales.
There’s been plenty of recent new business along that stretch of Midlothian Turnpike, as neighborhood market Supper Club recently opened its second area location, and the developers behind the Winterfield Crossing are planning an additional 13,500 square feet of commercial space at the mixed-use development.
