A local women’s medical practice is on the move again, this time with plans for a larger presence in western Chesterfield.

Virginia Physicians for Women held a groundbreaking ceremony last week for a new medical office at 13801 Bon Secours Drive on the Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center campus. The new facility will be larger than the practice’s nearby office, which will be relocated to the new building.

The new building is currently planned to be a single-story, 23,000-square-foot facility with space for up to 10 physicians. It’ll also have room for an increased number of mammography and ultrasound machines compared to the current St. Francis office.

In remarks during the ceremony, VPFW President Dr. Kenley Neuman said the practice was eager to contribute to what’s a growing medical hub that’s been expanding in response to population growth and demand for services in western Chesterfield. The new office is expected to open in fall 2026.

“We are really excited to become part of that growth, and we want to expand on our presence and strengthen our partnerships with Bon Secours and St. Francis,” Neuman said “Our facility is going to be more than twice the size that it is now, which reflects our ongoing commitment to providing continued access and quality care.”

Chesterfield Board of Supervisors member Jessica Schneider and VPFW CEO Ronnie Milligan also shared remarks at the event.

Thursday’s groundbreaking followed VPFW’s $1.9 million acquisition of the 4-acre project site in September, according to online property records. The site was split off out of a 7.3-acre parcel owned by the nonprofit Commonwealth Foundation for Cancer Research, which was the seller in the deal.

The new office project, including construction, equipment and land acquisition, is currently estimated to cost $17 million, Milligan told BizSense in an interview following the event.

VPFW currently leases space in the St. Francis Medical Pavilion at 13801 St. Francis Blvd. Milligan said the current space isn’t sufficient to keep up with demand for services, and only has room for six physicians to work there at one time.

The project’s general contractor is Loughridge & Co. PSH+ is the architect. VPFW is financing the project through a loan with Atlantic Union Bank. NAI Dominion is the project’s developer.

The practice’s new building is slated to rise next to a Bon Secours medical office and surgical center that’s under construction at 13701 Bon Secours Drive. Bon Secours is also currently seeking state regulatory approval to add 40 more acute-care beds to St. Francis, following the completion of a 55-bed expansion at the hospital last year.

VPFW also has another project in the works across town.

In the West End, the group is planning to demolish the former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 5600 Monument Ave. and replace it with a two-story, 32,000-square-foot medical office. It would replace VPFW’s office at the nearby Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital campus. The practice bought the church property in late 2024, and intends to start demolition work on the site in the fall, according to Chris Rice of NAI Dominion, which is also developing the St. Francis project.

In addition to the offices on the campuses of St. Mary’s and St. Francis, VPFW has locations at West Creek Medical Park in Short Pump, Puddledock Medical Center in Prince George, the campus of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital and a headquarters in Midlothian.
