Benedictine seeks approval for capacity increase, middle school expansion

At its Aug. 5 regular meeting, the Goochland Board of Supervisors will hear from the Benedictine Society of Virginia, which is requesting to increase the maximum occupancy for Benedictine College Prep and other parts of the campus at 12829 River Road.

The society is requesting to increase the maximum occupancy limits of up to 1,500 daytime people for the combined uses of the school, a monastery and a church on the location’s 50 acres. The increased capacity would allow for greater student enrollment, including the addition of a 350-student middle school program.

The existing maximum occupancy for the location is 935 people. The Goochland Planning Commission at its June 17 meeting voted 4-0 to recommend approval of the ordinance to the board.

Chesterfield officials last week celebrated the opening of a replacement facility for A.M. Davis Elementary School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new A.M. Davis is the first elementary school to be built by Chesterfield that features a new two-story prototype design, according to a county news release. The 115,000-square-foot building has capacity for up to 1,000 students.

The first floor has classrooms for preschool, kindergarten, first grade and special education. The second level is home to classrooms for second, third, fourth and fifth grades. The school also features a gym, media center and a STEM makerspace, as well as art and music rooms.

The existing A.M. Davis, which was built in 1964 and is situated on the same site on South Providence Road where its replacement was built, had a little over 700 students in the 2024-25 school year. The new facility will be able to handle future student population growth.

The new school is the first project to be completed among those funded by the 2022 bond referendum.

Demolition work was underway last week to tear down the old A.M. Davis. A playground and athletic fields are planned to take its place.

Henrico to pay $3M to acquire land for park beside Maybeury Elementary

Henrico County is planning to purchase undeveloped land beside Maybeury Elementary School and the Tuckahoe Family YMCA for a new park.

Officials will announce plans for the park at a community event Monday at noon at the school at 901 Maybeury Drive. The plans are the result of resident and community support for preservation of the property.

At their July 22 meeting, Henrico supervisors approved spending $2.9 million to acquire the 6.1-acre parcel at 9301 Patterson Ave., at the corner of Patterson and Maybeury Drive.

An entity tied to Build Senior Living had purchased the property for $1.9 million in 2022 with plans to develop an assisted living and memory care facility. That plan didn’t go forward and the property was recently put back on the market.

More than 400 residents signed a petition asking Henrico to acquire property for a neighborhood park, according to a county release. The petition requested that the park include trails and a playground but remain largely undeveloped.

Monday’s event will feature comments from Tuckahoe Supervisor Jody Rogish and others and include a bounce house, dunk tank, games and food trucks. The event is free and open to the public.
